Wellness Programs offered at Cancer Action

Comfort Massage
Therapeutic massage can help relieve the emotional strain associated with the diagnosis of a serious illness and in the process of recovery.  The massage therapist who is skilled in working with this special population will offer a calm and reassuring  presence.  The acceptance of the client at whatever stage of their illness reduces feelings of helplessness and loneliness.  After receiving many medically invasive procedures, it is relaxing for the patient to experience this type of nurturing touch.

Moving Into Wellness
Move your body…move into your life…with awareness, gentleness, playfulness, grace, passion, and truth!  Join us for this six- session program of movement and support that will nurture your body, mind, emotions and spirit! Designed especially for those in all stages of recovery from cancer, these sessions will “meet you and your energy level where you are” and will awaken your senses, expand your energy, rejuvenate, and relax your body/mind.  Each session will include gentle movement, supportive group interaction, and guided relaxation.

Pink  Ribbon Program: Pilates Based Program for Breast Cancer Survivors
Exercise may be the last thing you feel like doing after breast cancer surgery.  All you want to do is rest.  In the past, that’s exactly what doctors recommended.  However, recent studies indicate a link between moderate physical exercise and improved quality of life for breast cancer survivors.  At Cancer Action we are dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive body image for all breast cancer survivors.  The Pink Ribbon Program will help stretch and strengthen the shoulder, chest, back, and abdominal muscles, allowing women to regain full range of motion to those areas affected by surgery.  The program is suitable whether your surgery was recent or several years ago and accommodates all fitness levels.

Pink Ts: A Program of Exercise for Breast Cancer Recovery
Pink “Ts” (symbolic of “exercise”) is designed for breast cancer survivors following cancer treatments.  The goal of this program is to help survivors maintain healthy and strong bodies while improving in physical strength, endurance and overall daily living.  Techniques are taught using an exercise ball and resistance band.  Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist and Personal Trainer, Sami Papacek, started this program after discovering that a number of women were searching for answers about how to safely and appropriately incorporate an exercise regimen into their lives after going through treatments.

Restorative Balanced Moves
Restorative Balanced Moves is a weekly class for men and women that integrates rhythmic and mindful movement, conscious breathing and guided relaxation.  This class is facilitated by an occupational therapist that is trained and skilled in instructing participants through gentle movements designed to improve energy, strength and mobility for individuals at any stage of their cancer recovery.  Participants will learn and practice movements that focus on the whole body, using a systemic movement format that combines elements of yoga, the NIA technique and Tai Chi with segments of the class done standing, sitting and lying on the floor.  Regular participation in this class provides a number of benefits.
